Nursing Home Abuse & Neglect

The National Center on Elder Abuse estimates that as many as one to two million elders, defined as anyone over 65 years of age, are victims of nursing home abuse and neglect in the United States.  Unfortunately, because of the physical and mental condition of many nursing home residents, the fact that they are often reluctant to report abuse, and because many elders have very few visitors, most cases of nursing home abuse and neglect go unreported.  In fact, experts believe as few as one in six instances of abuse and neglect is reported.

What is Elder Abuse and Neglect?

Generally, elder abuse is defined as "intentional or neglectful acts by a caregiver or 'trusted' individual" that leads to, or may lead to, the elder being harmed.  Elder abuse and neglect encompasses several types of mistreatment, including the following:

  • Physical abuse - use of physical force to injure or threaten an elder
  • Emotional abuse - use of verbal attacks, threats, isolation, or any other act that causes or could cause the elder to suffer emotional distress or pain
  • Sexual abuse - sexual contact that is forced, in any method, upon an elder, including those who are unable to consent to the activity
  • Exploitation - use of theft, fraud, misuse of power, or undue influence used to gain control over the elder's money or property
  • Neglect - caregiver's failure or refusal to respond to an elder's physical or emotional needs or safety, including failure to provide basic care or services
  • Abandonment - when a caregiver deserts the elder

Signs of Abuse

There are many signs of abuse and neglect to look for when visiting an elder.  These include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Unexplained physical harm, including cuts, bruises, or burns
  • Signs of malnutrition
  • Broken bones or signs of a fall
  • Bed sores
  • Instances of the elder wandering off the premises
  • Signs of sexual abuse
  • Change in mood or emotional state
