Birthing Process Injuries

Brachial plexus birth injuries can result in Erb’s palsy.  The brachial plexus is a group of nerves that control movement in the shoulders, arms, and hands, and damage can occur to this area during an obstetric emergency such as shoulder dystocia.  Shoulder dystocia occurs when the infant becomes stuck in the pelvic area, necessitating the use of force to remove or guide the baby out safely.  Sometimes this removal requires forceps or vacuum extraction.

If a doctor fails to identify that the mother or child is in distress related to shoulder dystocia, or does not act appropriately, the infant may develop Erb’s palsy.  Inappropriate action in this situation includes excessive force or turning the infant in the wrong direction when trying to alleviate the problem, or using forceps or a vacuum inappropriately.  Nerve damage can occur as a result of these errors and require surgery to correct.  Not acting quickly enough can also cause blood loss and deprive the baby of oxygen, resulting in more serious brain damage.
